What's New at the Friedman Diabetes Institute

November 18, 2011:  FDI Diabetes Fair!
In recognition of the American Diabetes Month, and the World Diabetes Day, Gerald J. Friedman Diabetes Institute (FDI) conducted a diabetes fair. We provided a day of fun, relaxation, and education for people with diabetes, caregivers and all who wanted to learn about diabetes prevention and management. The program was presented by the Certified Diabetes Educators – dietitians, nurses, fitness instructors, and a social worker. It included sessions on healthy holiday eating; cardio dance exercise; yoga for beginners; relaxation techniques, as well as classes on “understanding your BMI and A1C”. Healthy refreshments and free raffle drawings were provided throughout the day.

fdi marathon participants Helen Cech and David IsaacsonHelen Cech and David Isaacson (seen here sporting 2011 NYC Marathon Finisher medals) have taken on the challenge to manage diabetes with healthy lifestyle choices. Both are members of the Friedman Diabetes Institute’s Achilles program which offers athletic coaching in twice weekly workouts and weekend events ranging from 1.7 mile walks in Central Park to marathons. When Helen joined the program in 2009, she could not walk up a flight of stairs and was constantly tired. Her goal was to simply feel better so she could get around. Last month, Helen certainly exceeded her goal by completing the 26.2-mile course of the NYC Marathon. David completed his third NYC marathon and shared his experience and tips for success with Helen. Congratulations to both on this remarkable achievement!

FDI participation in ADA Step Out in NYCThe Friedman Diabetes Institute joined hundreds of other participants for the American Diabetes Association's Step Out and Walk event at the South Street Seaport in New York City. The annual walk brings together those living with diabetes as well as their families, friends and health care teams to raise funds for diabetes research and advocacy. A health fair on the day of the event also helped educate and inform the community about diabetes prevention and treatment. The 5-mile course over the Brooklyn Bridge was made all the more enjoyable by the beautiful, sunny weather. FDI is committed to participating in fundraising events like Step Out and Walk to support and honor our patients living with diabetes.

Friedman Diabetes Institute (FDI), in collaboration with the Beth Israel Medical Center’s Volunteer Department, recently received a grant from the United Hospital Fund (UHF) to help patients manage their diabetes. The Health Coaches, volunteers trained by the Certified Diabetes Educators at FDI, will call patients to ensure their adherence to the medical recommendations: taking medications, monitoring glucose levels, self-examine feet, etc. In addition, Health Coaches will assist patients to navigate the health care system by helping them schedule necessary appointments, as well as providing information about available support groups, exercise and healthy cooking programs.

The grant was one of six, totaling $304,000, that the UHF provided to not-for-profit and public hospitals, nursing homes, and health care, academic, and public interest organizations to improve health care services.

The FDI team took to the streets of Manhattan on Sunday, June 5th to participate in the ADA's 20th annual bike ride. Trying to bring the world one step closer to a cure, Team FDI chose to ride for our many patients who courageously live with diabetes each day. The yearly bike tour aims to raise funds for diabetes research, and raise we did: FDI beat its goal and raised $1,105! The 30-mile bike ride took us from the north to south and east to west, covering almost every Manhattan neighborhood. Wonderful weather and energetic atmosphere made raising money for a great cause fun!

On Diabetes Alert Day the health care providers from the Friedman Diabetes Institute (FDI) joined forces to educate the public on diabetes screening, prevention and management. As part of the American Diabetes Association’s “Join the Million Challenge,” the nutritionists, nurses and social worker of the FDI administered the Diabetes Risk Test and discussed disease prevention with near 300 people. Some passers-by were at risk for diabetes, others had diabetes themselves and many had family members living with the condition. Diet, exercise and self-care behavior were some of the hot topics at the event. Taking a guess at a diabetes trivia question won many people a prize!

FDI is proud to take part in attaining the ADA’s goal of screening one million people for diabetes risk. If you are interested in taking the Diabetes Risk Test, you can find it at http://stopdiabetes.diabetes.org.
